Carlisle Water Polo's Swimming Team is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association and takes part in competitive swimming under
ASA guidelines. We are also members of the Northern Counties ASA and Cumbria ASA.

Carlisle Water Polo's Swim Team competes in the annual Cumbria Diddy League for swimmers aged 9 to 11. Clubs from all
over Cumbria compete in this tournament which culminates in an A Final and a B Final. Other counties also have Diddy Leagues as a
way of introducing young swimmers to competitive swimming. Our Diddy League team travels by coach to the various Diddy League venues
- and you'll probably hear us before you see us coming!
DIDDY LEAGUE
Carlisle Water Polo's Swim Team also competes in the Cumbria Sprint League which is for swimmers age 12 and over. Again,
Sprint Leagues are organised throughout the country on a county basis. The Sprint League squad travel to fixtures by coach.
Carlisle Water Polo's Swim Team competes in Division Two the annual North West Speedo Swimming League. Whereas both the
Diddy League and Sprint League are organised by the Cumbria ASA, the North West Speedo Swimming League is organised by the Northern
Counties ASA and so sees us travel further afield to other counties including Cheshire and Lancashire. The Speedo League squad includes
swimmers from age 9-11 through to open age and again travel is by coach.
The Cumbria Age Group Swimming Championships see club members swim competitively as individuals - in the age groups you are
swimming for yourself although still in club colours and with the full support of club officials at poolside.
The Age Group Championships
are held yearly to decide the county's top swimmers in each event at each age and the fastest three swimmers in each event go on to
represent the Cumbria at the Inter Association Championships held in May / June. There are no coaches run to Age Group events because
individuals will be swimming at different venues at different times.
The Age Group Championships in Cumbria are based on the Amateur
Swimming Association's British Age Group Categories and BAGCAT points are used to rank swimmers of the same sex and age on a national
basis.

Throughout the year, Carlisle Water Polo swimmers take part in various galas and meets both in Cumbria and beyond either as
a team or on an individual basis. Clubs all over the country organise galas and meets and Carlisle Water Polo holds its own Friendly
Gala every September.
GALAS AND MEETS
Rather than specialise in one event, the Amateur Swimming Association believes that each swimmer should compete in a number
of events to help develop swimming potential. In the UK, events are divided into categories - the British Age Group Categories or
BAGCats for short.
When a swimmer competes in a BAGCat event, their time is converted into points that take into account a swimmer's
age and sex. A swimmer can take part in as many events in a season as they choose to, but only their highest points score in each
swimming category will count towards their final BAGCat total.
As a competitive swimming club, all club swimmers have the opportunity to qualify for the ASA Competitive Swimming Performance Awards
whenever they swim competitively, either in one of the above events or at the club's own regular timings. Bronze, silver, gold and
platinum sew-on patches are awarded to swimmers who attain the times required by the ASA to qualify for the relevant award. The table
below shows the times required to achieve each award. Swimmers get swimming - parents get sewing!
