Carlisle get into the semis with 100% wins

Carlisle travelled down to Walsall to take part in the first round of the youth boys ASA Championships.  They used their fast swimming skills and their team work to win all their matches and to sit at the top of their group. In between the games the players enjoyed two days of chilling with their team mates and having a laugh. Carlisle goes on to play City of Birmingham A in the Semi Finals at Manchester Aquatic Centre on Saturday 26th April 2008.

Carlisle v City of Birmingham B

Their first game of the day was against City of Birmingham B.  With the games lasting only two halves of seven minutes Carlisle used their swimming skills to dominate the game.  With Dan Barker set up in the pit, Ciaran James passed the ball on top of the water and Dan turned the defender and scored his first goal. Carlisle set up an attack and moved it around the arc but a good save from the Birmingham keeper denied them a goal. Birmingham then had a player on his way towards the Carlisle goal and scored against the ever improving Marc Robinson. Carlisle used their strength to keep going in the first half and goals were scored from Matt Little (1), Ciaran James (2) and Dan added two more goals.

In the second half Dylan Smith replaced Marc Robinson in the Carlisle goals.  Matt Little made a good swim to half way to win the ball. He passed the ball to Decland Ellwood who made a good pass to Ciaran James who had no challenge to score his third goal.  Birmingham set up their attack and threatened it around the arc and Dylan Smith caught the ball passed it on to Jonny Gatehouse down the right wing who passed it onto Matthew Quirk, made a quick pass to Brett Sharpe who lobbed the keeper and scored his first goal.  Carlisle quickly regained control of the ball and Sam Liver passed a ball into the pit and Dan Barker got the Birmingham defender sent out. Carlisle quickly set their man up and a quick one two between Matt Gireve and Michael Brown and the ball were in the back of the net. Brett added another goal with Dan adding another three and Ciaran finished the game with his fourth goal.

Carlisle v Bristol

The second game of the day was against Bristol. Carlisle carried on their teamwork with Dan Barker in the pit putting some good backhands away. Lancaster defended well and didn’t give Bristol a chance to get into their five meters. Matthew Gireve took a lesson out of Dans book and scored in the top right hand corner from a back hand from a good fast pass from Decland Elwood. With Bristol not been able to get into their five meters they had a quick lob which Marc Robinson was not ready for. From the centre Matt passed the ball to Sam Liver made a quick pass to Michal Brown who made a nice bounce shot into the bottom left corner. Bristol tried their luck with another shot from seven meters and Marc reflected the ball twice but Bristol managed to slot it away.

The second half saw goal after goal, two from Dan from the pit, one from Matt Little and another goal from Matthew Gireve to make his second goal of the match.  Bristol Coach got a red card but managed to call a time out from the bath side. Bristol set up but Marc Robison made two saves and denied Bristol a goal.  Two more late goals from Ciaran and Matt Little finished the game on 12 goals to 2

Carlisle v Croydon Amphibians

Carlisle played their first game of three on Sunday. Croydon gave Carlisle their first major challenge of the weekend. For four and half minutes of the first quarter both Carlisle and Croydon were more in a swimming competition swimming from one end of the pool to another. It wasn’t till Matthew Grieve made a pass in front other Mat Little who delivered a quick push shot into the bottom right hand corner. Ciaran James finished of the first half with a sly goal from seven meters.

Second half started the same as the first with both teams swimming back and forth. Croydon then made a mistake and got a man sent out and some good man up work and Matt slotted the ball in above the keepers head. The swimming match continued and Croydon put two goals away to make the score 3 2.  Carlisle lost the ball and Croydon called a time out. Croydon made two passes and Brett made an interception and passed the ball onto Michael Brown. Michael made a quick pass to Jonny Gatehouse who dummied the keeper and finished the game with his first goal of the tournament.

Carlisle v City of Manchester A

Carlisle played Manchester A which was for some reason Manchester B. With Carlisle thinking their next game was going to be hard Carlisle used some of their less experienced players more in this game. The first three minutes of the game both keepers defended well and no goals were given until Brett Sharpe found a gap and scored the first goal of the match.  Dan Barker got a man sent out and a quick one two saw Carlisle score there second goal.  Decland Ellwood and Matt Little also added two goals with Marc Robinson saving everything that came at him.

Dylan Smith took over in goals. Manchester got another player ejected and Ciaran made sure that the ball was in the back of the net.  Manchester players swam up hard to the Carlisle net and one of their players found a gap and had a one on one shot with Dylan whose fingers just touched the ball but was not enough to stop the ball from crossing the line. Carlisle played hard and scored another four goals two more from Ciaran James, one from Dan and another final goal from Matt Little

Carlisle v City of Manchester B

Carlisle last game of the weekend was against Manchester B team who were in fact the A team.  Carlisle thought this would have been their toughest match of the weekend but were pleasantly surprised. Manchester got two players sent out within seconds apart and Carlisle used this opportunity to convert that into their first goal which came from Bret Sharpe from the top of the Arc. Manchester then pulled back a goal to make the game one all. Carlisle set of from the centre and a quick couple of passes into the pit Dan scored another of his backhands. This was then followed by Ciaran James first goal of the game. The first half finished quickly with both Carlisle goal Keeper Marc Robinson and Manchester goalkeeper denying any more goals.

The Carlisle lads were now up for a big win to show Manchester what they can do. The second half started with Bret Sharpe getting one of the Manchester players ejected which Coach Dave Barker called a time out. Carlisle set man up and threatened the goalkeeper which paid off well with Ciaran James scoring his second goal. Carlisle then got four of their players sent out but the strong defence showed Manchester that nothing can get past them and denied them of four goals which could have put them in front. Ciaran James then scored his hatric of the game on another man down. To finish the game off Matt Little put the ball in the back of the net for the last goal of the tournament.
